Marina Gavito is set out for the future. I am lucky to call her a friend and remain close as she continues to grow. Marina’s passion, ability to get scrappy when she needs to, and her resilience speaks volumes. She is deeply connected to her hometown of San Antonio, Texas and has her pulse on the future of her city and beyond. As a board member for VIA, a Committee Member for the San Antonio Airport Committee Development Committee, a corporate innovator, and the Chairman of the Board for M.O.V.E. Texas Marina is going big places. I for one, can’t see what Marina conquers next.
How/why did you get into tech?
I was introduced to the tech world via PREP (the pre-freshman engineering program).
In this program, speakers- including women- came to talk to us every Friday. I was fascinated by the women in tech and the problems they were focused on solving.
What role do you play in the tech ecosystem?
I do lots of connecting and community-building. San Antonio, where I’m based, is spread out and our tech ecosystem tends to be in silos. So connecting the dots tends to be a pivotal (and sometimes hard!) role.
What do you believe is the most exciting tech trend for 2019?
I’m interested to see how things play out with social media channels. You see people abandoning Facebook and jumping to Instagram and I’m curious if that trend will continue and how it will all shake out.
Who is a person in tech that inspires you? Why?
My old boss Karin and my current boss Lea. I love how both support and promote women in tech. They are both so incredible and have pushed me to my next level!
What advice would you give for someone who wants to get into tech?
If you’re a woman- having presence (and confidence) is extremely important. It’s not easy, but study up on tips and tricks to get you there.
