Tech Tuesday: Financial Freedom

Meet Greg Johnson: Executive Vice President and General Manager of Intuit’s Consumer Group. We caught up at #Money2020 before our talk on the mainstage tonight (10/29) at 5:30pm (with a very special guest!)

Greg leads an organization that offers a suite of consumer tax and financial products and services in the U.S. and Canada, including TurboTax®, TurboTax Live, Turbo and Mint.

Intuit was an early leader in personal financial management software with its 2009 acquisition of Mint. At the time, Mint counted 1 million users — today it has more than 20 million and is complemented by software for managing accounting and taxes for both home and business.

Greg joined Intuit in 2012 as senior vice president of marketing for the Consumer Tax Group. In 2014, Greg was awarded the Intuit CEO Leadership Award, which recognizes employees who deliver trajectory-changing outcomes while being a role model and teaching the company’s values.

An executive and marketing professional with more than 20 years’ experience, Greg’s expertise spans consumer packaged goods, retail, and international and emerging markets. Prior to joining Intuit, he worked for world-class organizations, including Kraft Foods, SC Johnson, Kodak, Gillette, Best Buy, and the United States Air Force. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Research from the United States Air Force Academy.

Tell us more about what you do and how you moved into your space.

I was attracted to the relevance of the industry. Everyone has to do taxes and manage their finances, yet the problems can be huge for many. At Intuit, we fall in love with understanding the customer’s problem and seek to tackle big challenges. Here, we can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

What role do you play in the tech ecosystem and why is that role important?

The Intuit ecosystem has more than 50 million unique tax filers, 37 million personal finance users (on Mint and Turbo), delivers more than $80 billion in tax refunds and more than $180 billion in payroll. We are uniquely positioned to deliver benefits to consumers.

How has technology impacted your industry and why is this important?

Tech has enabled the delivery of personalized experiences by leveraging AI. This personalization allows users to have a more seamless experience, delivering complete confidence in our financial products.

It also removes frictions. For example, it allows us to remove unnecessary screens in tax prep so customers can do less work – accomplished via AI and our tax knowledge engine.

What do you believe is the most exciting tech trend for 2019 (as it relates to your industry)?

Technology enabling hybrid experiences between do-it-yourself and in-person via a virtual expert platform. TurboTax Live is a great example, delivering the benefits of both technology and personal interactions.

What advice would you give for someone who wants to get into your space?

Fall in love with understanding the customer’s problem, not just the solution. Then work to deliver benefits to the customer that will lead to the best product or service.
